Why June Is the Best Month for Family Photos in Indiana

If you’ve ever asked me when to book family photos, you’ve probably heard me say: June!

It’s truly the perfect month. School is out, schedules are easier, and Indiana is showing off. The Midwest knows how to do summer right—everything is alive, lush, and glowing. One of my favorite nature preserves fills with tall wispy grass and wildflowers this time of year, and the river area is a green wonderland.

Family sessions in June are relaxed and meaningful. We take our time, soak in the golden light, and capture a mix of both posed and candid images. Think: a few everyone-looking-at-the-camera portraits and a whole lot of laughs, snuggles, and real connection in between.

We’ll start about 90 minutes before sunset—around 7:30 p.m., —when that dreamy golden light makes everything feel extra magical.

June is also the perfect time to bring everyone together. If your extended family is usually scattered and busy, summer is your golden opportunity to get everyone in the frame, from grandparents to grandkids.

Here’s what Katy Burke had to say after booking an extended session:

“We booked an extended family session with Amanda as a gift to my mother-in-law. Photographing 19 people—seven of them 10 and under!—was no easy task. Amanda was so calm, flexible, and efficient. She let the kids show their personalities and still managed to get beautiful photos. Several in our group aren’t comfortable in front of the camera, but she put everyone at ease and guided us the whole way. We were shocked at how natural and genuine everyone looked in the photos! We couldn’t be happier with our images.”

Book your session now and receive 20% off any extended family session (more than 5 people)—just for responding to this blog post.
