Why I Invest in Newborn and Maternity Education Every Year

Newborn and maternity photography require more than a good eye. They require knowledge, patience, and a deep respect for bodies that are changing in powerful ways.

That’s why, every year, I invest in continued professional education focused on both newborn and maternity photography. This week, I’m attending my annual education retreat, an intensive program that covers safety, posing, workflow, and the overall client experience for expecting and new parents.

While the retreat is well known for its newborn education, a significant portion is dedicated to maternity posing, comfort, and creating images that feel both beautiful and respectful of the season a mother is in.

Education Before Implementation

One of the most important parts of this retreat is the opportunity to practice before applying anything to paid client sessions.

Each year, I work with a very small number of maternity and newborn models to carefully test and refine new techniques. This ensures that anything introduced into my regular workflow has already been thoughtfully practiced and adjusted with safety and comfort as the priority.

This process protects my clients.

And it keeps the studio experience calm and intentional.
